China has emerged as a critical partner of the Afghan Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. As the Taliban seeks official recognition internationally, and regional countries and the UN stress the need for more inclusive governance and a greater guarantee of human rights, China’s engagement with Afghanistan offers key insights into the future trajectory of the country. To highlight important developments in China’s relationship with Afghanistan, the Stimson Center has developed a database of recent critical events, Chinese government statements, and major bilateral interactions.
