Washington, DC – The Stimson Center is pleased to announce the appointment of two exceptional professionals to its Board of Directors: Dr. Lisa Hoffman, an expert on urban governance and social change in East Asia, and John Demers, a seasoned national security and legal affairs leader with extensive experience across both public service and the private sector. Their diverse experience enhances Stimson’s capacity to address today’s global security and governance challenges.
“Lisa and John bring distinct but complementary perspectives to the Stimson Center,” said Brian Finlay, President and CEO of the Stimson Center. “Their commitment to security and smart governance reflects our values and enhances our ability to shape real-world solutions in an increasingly complex global environment,” said Finlay. “Stimson will benefit greatly from the depth of expertise and critical thinking that John Demers and Lisa Hoffman bring to the table.”
John Demers serves as Corporate Secretary and Vice President and Assistant General at The Boeing Company, where he oversees legal matters related to corporate governance, finance and strategy, environmental and enterprise operations, and cybersecurity. Prior to rejoining Boeing in 2021, Demers served as Assistant Attorney General for National Security at the U.S. Department of Justice under both Presidents Trump and Biden. In that role, he led the efforts to counter cyber threats, terrorism and espionage, and oversaw national security aspects of export control, foreign investment, and telecommunications.
Lisa Hoffman is a professor in the School of Urban Studies at University of Washington Tacoma. Her research explores how power, subjectivity, and spatiality intersect in urban life, particularly in China. Hoffman has conducted fieldwork researching urban professionals, rural urbanization, regimes of green urbanisms, and volunteerism in urban China, and has lived in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
