Former Stimson Board Member John K. Hurley Appointed Under Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence

Washington, DC – The Stimson Center applauds the confirmation of former Board Director John K. Hurley as Under Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

“John is a great American who brings a deep record of service to the United States together with strategic, undaunted approaches to some of our most complex global challenges. The combination is sure to serve him well as Under Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, and we wish him all the very best as he embarks upon this new chapter for American national security and global leadership,” said Finlay.

John Hurley joined the Stimson Center Board of Directors in April 2024. His most recent tenure was as Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Cavalry Asset Management and Managing Member of TGK Ventures. Based in San Francisco, Cavalry invests primarily in publicly traded technology companies while TGK invests primarily in privately held companies and real estate. 

Mr. Hurley graduated with honors from Princeton in 1986, where he was Chairman of the Daily Princetonian.  Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served for five years in the US Army. During the First Gulf War, as a battalion fire direction officer for the First Cavalry Division, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After receiving his MBA from the GSB in 1993, he was an analyst and portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments and Managing Partner of Bowman Capital Management before founding Cavalry in 2003.
