Distributed ledger technology (DLT), such as Blockchain, is being characterized as revolutionary in its potential to alter the world economy. Stimson is identifying applications and implications of DLT for non-proliferation and international security at the international, national, and operational (industry) level. Exploratory research is considering how the technology enhances or weakens the security of nuclear material, technologies, and facilities. Specifically, Stimson is focusing on the following four focus areas: nuclear security, safeguards information management, export controls, and controlling dual-use chemical items.
