Statement on the Leaders Summit on Climate

Today and tomorrow, President Biden is hosting the Leaders Summit on Climate to encourage international efforts to address the climate crisis ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November.

Sally Yozell, Director of the Environmental Security Program at the Stimson Center released the following statement on the importance of this event:

“As the first major foreign policy summit of the Biden Presidency, the Leaders Summit on Climate is an important opportunity to build momentum. It comes after a year when climate impacts hit home like never before. Record drought, heat, and storms have underscored the threat posed by climate change to people and the environment.

The ambitious announcement from the U.S. and China to cooperate on climate change and reduce emissions is a vital step — transparency and accountability is key to success. We need to look forward, invest in renewable energy, promote nature-based and ocean solutions, end coal investment in foreign assistance, and scale up climate finance to vulnerable island nations.”

In response to the climate crisis and its impact on coastal cities, the environmental security program at the Stimson Center developed the Climate and Ocean Risk Vulnerability Index (CORVI), a tool to support governments, investors, and the insurance industry to better understand these impacts and incorporate climate and ocean risks into their decision-making. By providing a coastal city risk profile, decision-makers can prioritize action and build resilience where it’s needed most.
