在大选期间“敲打中国”(China Bashing) 似乎已经成为美国总统竞选的惯例。其敲打的内容从中国操纵汇率到中国的军事崛起，乃至中国对外贸易中不正当竞争，不一而足。敲打中国是候选人证明自己爱国的方式，也是赢取民众支持率的方式。虽然真正老辣的政客和清醒的顾问都了解简单地对华强硬并不能解决美国外交内政中的问题，但是这并不妨碍他们在国内竞选中把中国列为反面典型敲打。
