About this report
As recommended last September by Secretary-General António Guterres in his groundbreaking report, Our Common Agenda (OCA), the Summit of the Future—highly anticipated for September 2023 in New York—offers a unique opportunity to address today’s global challenges head-on; these include the threat of irreversible climate change, new COVID-19 variants and sub-variants, fear of growing cyber-crimes, and the continued destructive wars in Africa, Europe, and the Greater Middle East. Among the OCA’s presented (albeit briefly) ninety proposals for improved multilateral governance, three suggested ambitious global policy frameworks stand out, namely: a Declaration on Future Generations, a New Agenda for Peace, and a Global Digital Compact. In Rethinking Global Cooperation, the report team will contribute to the analytical underpinnings and design of each policy framework—as well as an overarching “New Global Deal” conceptual framework—with the aim of enhancing collaborative collective action to contend with today’s most pressing global problems. The report will serve as an important resource for the Doha Forum community, the Global Governance Innovation Network, and policy-makers, researchers, and advocates supporting the Summit of the Future preparations.
