Washington, DC – Three scholars at the Stimson Center are the proud recipients of a first-of-its-kind grant to cultivate entrepreneurship and innovation among women in the think tank sector, through the unique Evermay Visionaries program provided by S&R Evermay.

The Stimson Center is pleased to recognize Aude Darnal, Natalie Fiertz, and Julie Gregory as the 2023 recipients of this new award, which provides awardees with $50,000 in research funding, as well as access to professional development opportunities, and meeting space at Evermay to conduct this research.

Aude Darnal, Stimson Center Research Associate for the Reimagining U.S. Grand Strategy program, said, “The project I lead aims to provide a platform to Global South experts, who are underrepresented in Western policy circles, to elevate their voices and expertise to challenge the status quo in global governance. The S&R Evermay grant is critical in supporting this work as it enables me, for instance, to publish Global South scholars and to organize in-person events,” said Darnal. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without funding and access to the exceptional venue that is S&R estate.”

“As we look at ongoing conflicts around the world, such as in Gaza, Sudan, or Ukraine, it’s clear that more must be done at a global level to ensure the safety and security of civilians. Through this grant, I look forward to adding to a crucial body of emerging research on how UN special political missions – deployed in a wide range of contexts around the world – can and do contribute to the protection of civilians,” said Julie Gregory, Research Analyst with the Protecting Civilians and Human Security Program at the Stimson Center.

Natalie Fiertz, Research Associate with Stimson’s Environmental Security Program, said, “For millions of individuals living in vulnerable communities around the world, climate change is not a future risk – it is a clear and present danger. The Evermay Visionaries grant has greatly supported my work to integrate community resilience and social capital into climate resilience planning. With governments too often unable or unwilling to protect the most disadvantaged communities, it is increasingly vital to support the local connections and networks that can help fill the gap. The research that Evermay is supporting will help strengthen the Climate and Ocean Risk Vulnerability Initiative (CORVI), a decision support tool that provides an integrated and comprehensive picture of climate vulnerabilities in coastal communities around the world.”

The Evermay Visionaries program provides resources for early-stage professional women working in think tanks and academic institutions in the pursuit of the answers to critical research questions. The program, now in its first year, selects grantees whose research focuses on innovations in public policy, natural sciences, technology, philosophy, ethics, or interdisciplinary efforts across these fields.

“The Stimson Center team is proud to host a majority share of women among our staff – a rare thing in the realm of international security, and one of Stimson’s greatest assets.  S&R Evermay and Dr. Sachiko Kuno are cultivating the next generation of great minds in the think tank sector through this fellowship,” said Brian Finlay, President and CEO of the Stimson Center. “Through their work, Aude, Natalie, and Julie are challenging the status quo, interrogating old assumptions, embracing new approaches, and developing innovative solutions to some of the most pernicious challenges of our time.”

S&R Evermay is founded by Dr. Sachiko Kuno, a member of the Stimson Center Board of Directors, who also serves as the President and CEO of the S&R Evermay.
