Management and Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel
Practices
- Spent fuel is stored for 3-7 years in pools at each reactor facility, and afterwards is moved to the Interim Spent Fuel Storage site at the Bohunice reactor
Obligations
- Slovakia acceded to Euratom’s safeguards agreement (INFCIRC/193) and additional protocol in 2005
- Slovakia signed the Joint Convention in 1997 and ratified in 1999
- The National Policy and National Program for the Management of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste (Resolution 387/2015) provides the backbone of SNF management in Slovakia
- This policy does not include the option of reprocessing
- Future goals for fuel management are development of dry storage systems as well as progress towards a deep geological repository for SNF and high-level waste
- The government-identified options are creating a DGR in Slovakia, or working with other countries on a jointly owned DGR
- JAVYS, a.s. – a State owned company – is responsible for NPP decommissioning and spent nuclear fuel handling.
