Stimson, British Embassy event explores sustainable security against wildlife crime

Stimson hosted an event Jan. 10 with the British Embassy in Washington focusing on major themes of a forthcoming London conference on the illegal wildlife trade. A new Stimson report Killing Animals, Buying Arms examines this issue.

Participants included retired Gen. Carter Ham, former commander of AFRICOM; Sir Peter Westmacott, British ambassador to the United States; Ruairi O’Connell, head of the Illegal Wildlife Trade Department of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Valerie Hickey, biodiversity specialist with the World Bank; Monica Medina, former special assistant to Secretaries of Defense Leon Panetta and Chuck Hagel; and Varun Vira, research analyst, C4ADS. From Stimson: President and CEO Ellen Laipson; Managing Director Brian Finlay; and Johan Bergenas, deputy director of the Managing Across Boundaries Initiative.
