Leaders from government, civil society and the private sector met for four days of discussions over new hydropower developments on the Mekong River that potentially threaten the food security and wellbeing of millions. The convening held in Chiang Rai, Thailand was organized by the Stimson Center and the Institute for the Study of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) at Mae Fah Luang University. Discussions focused on future planning that calls for construction of new dams on the Lower Mekong that would pose significant environmental risks to an estimated 65 million people who rely on the Mekong as a central source for their food and livelihoods.
