The Stimson Center is proud to announce Richard M. Clarke as our 2017 Donor of the Year.

At the Stimson Center, we work to combat the world’s greatest threats to global peace and prosperity, but our efforts would be impossible without the generous financial support and involvement of our donors. This year’s honoree, Mr. Clarke, is a shining example of how a single individual can make a tremendous difference.

“Dick epitomizes the spirit and values of a Stimson donor. His financial support of the Center is, of course, essential to our success. But equally as important, our supporters routinely give of their time and their talents. As a former chemical industry executive, Dick gave substantive direction to our WMD industry engagement program. He led efforts in the 1990s to professionalize the functions of our Board. And, he actively served as a sounding board for successive Stimson leaders,” said Stimson President and CEO Brian Finlay. “We are deeply grateful to Dick for his enduring investment in the Center.”

Clarke became involved with Stimson as the CEO of a chemical manufacturing firm, Akzo America, Inc (now Akzo Nobel). In this capacity, he worked with a Stimson project focused on engaging the private chemical industry in support of the Chemical Weapons Convention negotiations. Clarke’s leadership was an immediate asset to the Center — and shortly thereafter, he was invited to join Stimson’s Board of Directors.

Clark served on Stimson’s Board from 1997 until 2009 and has continued to generously support Stimson through his financial contributions, remaining involved with the Center’s work serving as a guiding voice for Stimson’s leadership.
