Chilean Ambassador Alfredo Labbé Named Stimson Nonresident Fellow

The Stimson Center announced the appointment today of Ambassador Alfredo Labbé as Nonresident Fellow for the WMD, Nonproliferation, and Security program. Amb. Labbé joins Senior Associate Cindy Vestergaard, Senior Advisor Debra Decker, Research Analyst Lovely Umayam, and Nonresident Fellow Kathryn Rauhut on the WMD, Nonproliferation, and Security program team.

“Throughout a remarkable career of public service, Ambassador Labbé has dedicated himself to reducing the risk posed by nuclear proliferation and war,” said Stimson President and CEO Brian Finlay. “His diplomatic expertise, commitment, and pragmatism echoes that of Henry L. Stimson, the Center’s bipartisan namesake. I am thrilled to welcome him to Stimson as we continue to work toward solutions to address the greatest transnational threats of our time.”

Ambassador Alfredo Labbé is a senior Chilean Diplomat, serving currently as Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy for Nuclear and International Security. Since 2005, he has been closely associated to the NPT Review process. Amb. Labbé served as Deputy Head of the Chilean Delegation and Chair of Subsidiary Body in 2005, Head of Delegation and Vice-Chair of Main Committee in 2010, and Head of Delegation in 2015. In 2010, he chaired the Conference of the States Parties and Signatories to the Treaties establishing Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones. In 2012, he was elected Chair of the Preparatory Commission of the Organization for the Complete Test-Ban Treaty, CTBTO. From 2010 to 2012 he served as Governor of Chile to the IAEA’s Board of Governors. With a special interest in nuclear counter-terrorism, Ambassador Labbé served as Presidential “Sherpa” for the Nuclear Security Summit process from 2009 to 2010, and Deputy Head of Delegation to the Nuclear Security Summit in 2014.
