Salem A. Salem (also known as Salem al-Hasi) is a political analyst, strategist, and human rights advocate with four decades of experience in security, intelligence, and geopolitical affairs across the MENA region. His career encompasses leadership roles in Libya’s opposition movements, government institutions, international human rights organizations, and academia. He is recognized for his sharp policy-relevant analysis of regional dynamics, conflict resolution, and security challenges.
From 2012 to 2015, Mr. Salem served as Director of the Libyan Intelligence Services, operating under highly complex, challenging, and perilous circumstances. This position provided him with deep insights into the security and geopolitical dynamics of North Africa and the Sahel region.
Mr. Salem was active in the international human rights sphere. He joined Amnesty International USA in 2004 as the Algeria Country Specialist and later chaired the North Africa Co-group (2008– 2011). His advocacy work reinforced his understanding of the critical nexus between human rights, political legitimacy, and long-term regional security.
Currently, Mr. Salem leads NAS Consultancy, a firm specializing in geopolitical risk analysis, intelligence strategy, and security sector reform across North Africa and the Sahel. His insights support policy formulation, conflict mediation, and institutional capacity-building efforts in fragile and transitional states.
In parallel with his political work, Mr. Salem has held academic positions in the United States, including Assistant Professor of Arabic at the University of North Georgia. He obtained a PhD in Law from Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, with a focus on private international law and its development in the age of globalization, the digital revolution, and artificial intelligence.
