Join us for Stimson’s annual Voices from Japan: National Security Speaker Series symposium. The strategic environment in Japan’s neighborhood has evolved rapidly over the past few decades, presenting new challenges for U.S.-Japan alliance cooperation. Gen. Shunji “Bert” Izutsu, the 36thChief of Staff of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and Lt. Gen. Kevin “Gumby” Schneider, Director of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, will join us to discuss the current and emerging issues facing the two air forces and how U.S.-Japan cooperation can meet these challenges going forward.

Gen. Shunji “Bert” Izutsu, Chief of Staff, Japan Air Self-Defense Force

Gen. Izutsu was previously the Commander of the Air Defense Command at Yokota and Commander of the Western Air Defense Force(Kasuga). He has also served as Director of Personnel Education in the Air Staff Officeand was Vice Commander of the Southwestern Air Division in Naha.

Lt. Gen. Kevin “Gumby” Schneider, Director of Staff, United States Air Force

Lt. Gen. Schneider was previously the Commander of United States Forces Japan, and Commander of the Fifth Air Force at Yokota. His staff assignments include tours on the Joint Staff, Air Staff, U.S. Air Forces Central Command, and Pacific Air Forces. He was also previously the Chief of Staff, Headquarters U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Camp Smith, Hawaii.
