Join us for a timely discussion with U.S. and Japanese experts on what lessons the conflict in Ukraine offers for maritime security issues in East Asia.

The security environment in East Asia is undergoing shifts in the field and in the regional capitals, especially in Japan, where the new National Security Strategy signals major changes for Japan’s defense policy. As tensions throughout the East China Sea increase, what are the implications for the United States and Japan’s efforts to strengthen norms in the region? What are the lessons from Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine for the peace and stability in East Asia?

This event will be simultaneously translated in Japanese and English. In-person attendees will need a smartphone, with the Zoom app downloaded to connect if needed.

Susumu Takai discusses the lessons Japan has taken from Ukraine’s defense efforts despite the differences between ground and maritime theaters.
Yurika Ishii discusses how the invasion of Ukraine reinforced for Japan the importance of the rule of law.
Kelly Grieco discusses how lessons from Ukraine’s air defense are applicable for maritime East Asia.
James Kraska discusses how the interpretation of jus ad bellum might influence how the international community responds to aggressive activities.
