As a growing number of global challenges continue to roil U.S.-China relations, one of the most intractable sources of discord emanates from the different American and Chinese political systems. The contradictions between democracy and authoritarianism are now playing out in trade disputes, diplomatic crises, and military tensions, with ever more dangerous potential consequences.

Orville Schell, the Arthur Ross Vice President on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society, joins China Program Director Yun Sun for a discussion about his new book, “Inside China’s Secret Prisons: An Undercover Exposé and Its Lasting Legacy,” on one of the most antagonistic issues between the U.S. and China: the question of political imprisonment and the export of goods made with “forced labor” that China has for decades been covertly and illegally feeding into the global marketplace.
