Shortly after the July 28 swearing in of Keiko Fujimori as Peru’s leader, the Stimson Center’s Latin America Program hosted a private dialogue with former President of Peru Francisco Sagasti. The conversation addressed the political volatility of recent years, as well as Peru’s remarkable economic stability, thanks in large part to its abundant reserves of copper and other minerals necessary for the global clean energy transition. Peru’s newest port, at Chancay, has further increased the country’s importance to global supply chains, regional economic integration, and great-power competition.
