A public fireside chat with Ambassador Sékou Berthe on Mali’s political transition, security challenges, regional diplomacy, and US–Mali relations.

The Stimson Center’s North Africa Program is pleased to host A Conversation with H.E. Mr. Sékou Berthe: Mali’s Strategic Outlook, a public event in our Ambassador Series.

Mali stands at a pivotal moment marked by political transition, evolving governance structures, and shifting external partnerships. As security pressures persist across the Sahel and regional alignments continue to change, Mali’s domestic and foreign policy choices carry significant implications for stability, sovereignty, and international engagement.

In this one-hour fireside chat, Ambassador Berthe will discuss Mali’s governance priorities, security challenges, and economic outlook, as well as the country’s evolving regional and global partnerships. The conversation will also explore the trajectory of US–Mali relations and areas where constructive dialogue and pragmatic cooperation may continue.

Moderated by Hafed Al-Ghwell, Senior Fellow and Director of the North Africa Program, the discussion will bring together policymakers, members of the diplomatic community, analysts, and regional experts for an in-depth exchange on Mali’s strategic direction and the broader implications for the Sahel.
