ABOUT THE EVENT
For decades, wildlife poaching and trafficking, particularly in elephant tusks and rhino horns, have presented serious conservation and biodiversity challenges. Today, in addition to being a development and economic issue, poaching and wildlife crime is increasingly associated with transnational criminal enterprises and financing of terrorist organizations. As a result, the issues are receiving unprecedented political and policy attention and governments, multilateral organizations and the NGO community are looking for innovative and balanced solutions across the conservation, development and security continuum. Novel partnerships within and between governments, as well as private sector innovation are also being pursued to counter poaching and wildlife crime.
In this light, on February 12 and 13, 2014, the UK Government will host a high-level summit focused on all aspects of the illegal wildlife trade from enforcement (poaching & trafficking) to demand, to development impacts. To help set the scene for that gathering, on January 10, 2014, the British Embassy in Washington, DC, in partnership with the Stimson Center, will host an event featuring major themes of the forthcoming London Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade. Participants will also showcase ongoing innovative initiatives at the national, multilateral, NGO and private sector levels that bridge the conservation, development and security divide.
