U.S. Foreign Policy in the Americas

This project examines the changing U.S. approach to Latin America amid the intensifying rivalry with China, and how Latin American foreign policy is adjusting to great power competition. The project pays special attention to Latin America’s diversifying global relationships, even as the United States pursues “preeminence” in its hemisphere. In doing so, it seeks to channel U.S. engagement to address a range of shared interests, including security and migration, but also democratic backsliding and economic development. Growing global interest in Latin America’s abundant critical minerals – including copper, lithium, and rare earth metals – is at the center of the scramble for geopolitical influence and economic ties in this strategic region.
