Bashir Ali Abbas

Bashir Ali Abbas is a Research Associate at the Council for Strategic and Defense Research, New Delhi. He has been involved in organizing the Chao Track India-Pakistan Dialogue at the Track II level and is a Network for Advanced Study of Pakistan (NASP) Fellow at the Takshashila Institution, Bangalore, for 2023-24. His research focuses on South Asian and Middle Eastern politics, cutting across a range of themes, including foreign and defense policies, conflict escalation dynamics, armed non-state actors, and issues in international law. He holds a Masters in Political Science from the University of Delhi, and a Bachelors in English, Political Science, and History from Christ University, Bangalore. Bashir currently also writes a weekly column for Hindustan Times Premium, titled Eye on the Middle East. His work has also been published by Lowy Interpreter, The Diplomat, Frontline, Cambridge International Law Journal (Blog), Journal of Defence Studies, and a number of New Delhi-based think tanks, including the Observer Research Foundation, National Maritime Foundation, and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies. During his fellowship, Bashir will explore naval competition in the Indian Ocean, and the potential for conflict escalation in the maritime domain between India and Pakistan.
