CORVI

Data-driven Climate Resilience

Getting Started

To apply CORVI to a new coastal city or island state, Stimson works closely with partners to develop a customized implementation plan with the option to use one of several training models. The implementation plan is developed in close consultation with partners to match the specific and unique technical needs of each project with the capacity of project partners.

The standard model for conducting a CORVI assessment is a year-long, 4-step process:

1. Training & Outreach

  • Stimson hosts workshops to train partners on how to properly conduct a CORVI assessment.
  • Stimson develops a comprehensive communications strategy to build grassroots and high-level government buy-in and lay the groundwork for eventual communication of the results.

2. Data Collection

  • Working with partners, Stimson collects data from global, national, and local databases; distributes expert surveys; and conducts detailed local expert interviews to gain a full picture of climate and ocean risks impacting the coastal city or island state.
  • Stimson conducts an assessment of resilience planning already underway in the coastal city or island state to ensure risks are understood and recommendations are tailored to the unique context of the coastal city or island state.

3. CORVI Analysis

  • Stimson combines this data in the CORVI data portal to construct CORVI risk scores for all 10 categories and 100 indicators for the coastal city or island state. These risk scores cover every aspect of coastal city and island state resilience and climate and ocean risks.
  • Stimson creates a city risk assessment with priority recommendations to build resilience.

4. Communicate Results to Galvanize Action

  • Stimson presents results and key metrics to government stakeholders, public and private investors, and the international community to demonstrate how climate change is directly and indirectly impacting the city and outline the kinds of investments needed to improve resilience.
