Dr. Joseph Sany is a Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Center’s Protecting Civilians and Human Security Program (PCHS), where he works on peacebuilding, governance, and security in Africa. A peacebuilding and governance expert with over twenty-five years of experience advancing peace, security, and development across the continent, Sany served as the inaugural Vice President of the Africa Center at the U.S. Institute of Peace, leading a team of more than 40 staff across the United States and African countries and expanding USIP’s Africa programs into a comprehensive institution supporting peace and security continent-wide.
He has also worked with several development institutions, where he successfully developed and implemented innovative peacebuilding strategies and designed and implemented system-strengthening projects in essential service sectors, including education, agricultural systems, food security, and youth development. International, regional, and local organizations frequently seek his expertise to facilitate high-level multi-stakeholder dialogues and collaborative actions that shape policy and practice in peace and development.
Sany has published on peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and civil society, including books and book chapters. He holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and an M.S. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University. He is fluent in English and French.
