Abiodun Modupe is a distinguished professional with extensive expertise in developing machine learning models for under-represented languages, leveraging theoretical foundations in computational linguistics and natural language processing to create innovative AI solutions. As a computer scientist, he holds an undergraduate degree in Computer Science with Mathematics, a master’s degree in information technology, and a PhD in Computer Science. With over a decade of experience, Abiodun excels as both a data-driven scientist and a committed educator, focusing on analytics, curriculum design, and student engagement.
His remarkable contributions have earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the DST-CSIR Inter-bursary PhD fellowship support, AWS Research grants, Masakhane WEB support from Mozilla’s open-source initiative, Google research funding, and various travel grants. Abiodun excels at executing comprehensive data extraction and analysis using advanced algorithms and deep regularization techniques to uncover actionable insights. He effectively bridges technical and business domains by advising both technical and non-technical stakeholders on optimal workflows for business development and growth. As an active member of the professional community, Abiodun belongs to the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society and regularly presents at academic conferences. He is also a committed member of Black in AI, serves on the publication committee of Deep Learning Indaba, and participates in the working group developing South Africa’s national artificial intelligence strategy—an AI policy initiative affiliated with The Future Society. Currently, Abiodun coordinates the Data Science program in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
