Fears of escalating conflict, a global food crisis, new COVID-19 variants, irreversible climate change, and eroding collaboration in the global economy threaten to undermine the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other efforts to advance human progress. Yet, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to review and improve global tools for managing such challenges, a Summit of the Future, is planned for September 2024 in New York by the United Nations’ 193 Member States, preceded by a preparatory ministerial meeting, in September 2023, at the start of UNGA High-Level Week in New York. Considering major proposals put forward initially in UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ seminal Our Common Agenda report (including a New Agenda for Peace, a Global Digital Compact, and a Declaration on Future Generations), this one-hour, high-level moderated conversation proposed for UNGA 2022 is intended to encourage more ambitious, forward-looking thinking and deliberation on global governance renewal and innovation in the run-up to the Summit of the Future.
