Potential for Political Violence: Kenya’s Aug. 4 Constitutional Referendum and 2012 General Election

Past

  in

August 2, 2010 — John Langlois, Country Representative for USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) in Kenya, joined us for a discussion on the potential for political violence in Kenya.

On August 4th, 2010, Kenya will vote on the third constitutional referendum since independence.  What are the chances for wide-spread violence ahead of and following the referendum? What does the history of electoral violence in Kenya tell us about the referendum and the possibility of violence leading up to Kenya’s 2012 election? What is the U.S. doing to help prevent this violence?

Security for a New Century is a nonpartisan discussion group for Congress. We meet regularly with U.S. and international policy professionals to discuss the post-Cold War and post-9/11 security environment. All discussions are off-the-record. It is not an advocacy venue.
