Much of the current international attention on the green transition is currently on the financing challenge for Global South countries. However, there needs to be more focus on the existing risks and the counterproductive effects of the green transition, notably for Global South countries producing the critical minerals that are essential to the technology used to achieve that transition

This Climate Talks private roundtable, under the Chatham House rule, featured speakers from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, who engaged with an audience of policy experts from across the Global South and the West, to identify the issues and share sustainable solutions around the conundrum between the impact of critical minerals extraction on the environment, human rights, conflict and development, opportunities to leverage economic gains from mineral extraction, and efforts to achieve the green transition.
