Please join us for the book launch of The Wellington Experience: A Study of Attitudes and Values Within the Indian Army with author Col. David O. Smith (retired).

The book offers an in-depth analysis of India’s premier professional military education institution and challenges some conventional wisdom on the Indian armed forces’ training and education, internal and external threat perceptions, and attitudes towards the state and security issues.

Speakers

David O. Smith is a Distinguished Fellow with the Stimson Center (South Asia Program) and an independent consultant to Sandia National Laboratories on issues related to South Asia. The former Senior Country Director for Pakistan in the Department of Defense, he retired as a colonel after 31 years of service. During thirty-one years of active duty service in the U.S. Army, he spent twenty-two years dealing with politico-military issues in the Near East and South Asia, including two three-year tours of duty as U.S. Army Attaché in Pakistan.

Amit Ahuja is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the processes of inclusion and exclusion in multiethnic societies. He has studied this within the context of ethnic parties and movements, military organization, intercaste marriage, and skin color preferences in South Asia.

Jack Gill is an Associate Professor at the Near East – South Asia Center. He previously worked on South Asia issues in the Pentagon. A former U.S. Army South Asia Foreign Area Officer, he retired as a colonel in 2005 after more than 27 years of service.

Polly Nayak is a Distinguished Fellow with the Stimson Center (South Asia Program). Nayak retired in 2002 as a senior government executive after a wide-ranging intelligence career. A longtime South Asia expert, she was the Intelligence Community’s most senior expert and manager on South Asia from 1995-2001.
