Peace operations remain one of the most visible mechanisms of the United Nations for maintaining international peace and security. Yet UN peacekeeping is under significant pressure, with financial constraints and geopolitical divisions bringing into question the sustainability of some existing missions and future of this tool. Peacekeepers continue to face direct attacks, requiring broader consideration of issues relating to safety and security. As the scale and intensity of armed conflicts rise globally, threat environments continue to evolve, requiring innovation and adaptation in the types of mandates, resources and capabilities required to prepare for future scenarios.

Amidst this complex environment, the Stimson Center will host Lieutenant General Cheryl Pearce, Acting Military Adviser for the Department of Peace Operations who serves as the most senior military official at UN headquarters. In a moderated conversation with Lisa Sharland, Senior Fellow and Director of Stimson’s Protecting Civilians and Human Security Program, the discussion will focus on the role of the military component in UN peacekeeping, and the contributions and future trajectory of such missions in a moment of global disruption.
