As the Arakan Army advances in western Myanmar, it has become one of the most powerful ethnic armed organizations shaping outcomes in the ongoing civil war.

With the Arakan Army (AA) now holding the grand majority of territory in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and the group pushing even further beyond into junta territory in other areas, it is critical to understand the group’s current position, network of alliances, and possible future moves.

As Myanmar’s civil war rages on, the AA’s continued movements, priorities, and constraints will deeply shape the war’s trajectory. This session will discuss these topics and consider the deeper implications of AA advances for the ultimate future of the war.
