About the Project

Building on the United States Institute of Peace commissioned 2019 report Central Asia’s Growing Role in Building Peace and Regional Connectivity with Afghanistan, and the 2020 book chapter “Central Asia, Great Power Competition, and Achieving Peace in Afghanistan”, both co-authored by Dr. Richard Ponzio and the Stimson Center Non-Resident Fellow Humayun Hamidzada (Director of the Afghanistan Peace Research Project at York University), the project will continue to undertake original research, prepare op-eds, field media interview requests, and participate in conferences related to scholarship on peacebuilding and regional cooperation with Afghanistan.

This report assesses recent initiatives by the five Central Asian republics and the Afghan government to establish a role for Afghanistan’s northern neighbors, particularly Uzbekistan, as a mediator or host for Afghan peace process negotiations and to strengthen areas of economic and political cooperation in the region.
