Sally Yozell is a Senior Advisor to the Environmental Security Program at the Stimson Center. Yozell explores the linkages between environmental degradation, the loss of ocean and coastal resources, illegal fishing and climate change and how these issues can threaten and undermine economic, food, and ecological security of people, communities and nations around the globe.
In the climate area she works with governments, coastal cities, and island states to build resilience in coastal communities threatened by the climate crisis. Previously, Yozell served as the Program Director where she led the development of CORVI, the Climate and Ocean Risk Vulnerability Initiative. CORVI takes a multidimensional approach to deliver detailed climate risk assessments and plans of action to government leaders and financial institutions who need to make smart climate decisions and investments. CORVI assessments are designed to reduce disaster risk, improve preparedness and build resilience for the safety and security of citizens.CORVI is now active in 16 different countries around the world.
Ms. Yozell has a successful track record addressing some of the most daunting ocean issues including working with the U.S. and other international governments, industry and civil society to develop and implement global security strategies to combat IUU fishing, thwart illicit networks, end forced labor abuse and work to increase seafood traceability and transparency along the global supply chain.
Before joining Stimson she oversaw the management of the Our Ocean Conferences (2014-2019), served as a Senior Advisor to former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and was the Director of Policy and Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She also led marine programs for The Nature Conservancy, Battelle Memorial Institute and worked in the United States Senate. She holds a MPA from Harvard University and BA from the University of Vermont.
