One week into the Israeli offensive against Iran, what has Israel achieved, and what has been the impact on the Iranian nuclear program and the civilian populations of both Israel and Iran?

Israel launched massive strikes on Iran on June 13 with the announced aim of degrading Iran’s nuclear program. One week in, the war has broadened to include attacks on civilian infrastructure and a serious retaliatory response from Iran. What are the prospects for a wider war or a diplomatic resolution? How much damage has been done to the Iranian nuclear program?

Barbara Slavin, Distinguished Fellow, Stimson Center (Moderator)

Barbara Slavin is a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington and a lecturer in international affairs at George Washington University. Prior to joining Stimson, she founded and directed the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council and led a bi-partisan task force on Iran. The author of Bitter Friends, Bosom Enemies: Iran, the US and the Twisted Path to Confrontation (2007), she is a regular commentator on US foreign policy and Iran on NPR, PBS and C-Span.

Olli Heinonen, Distinguished Fellow, Stimson Center

Olli Heinonen is a Distinguished Fellow with the Korea program and 38 North. He was Senior Advisor on Science and Nonproliferation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, DC from 2015 to January 2020. From 2010 to July 2017, he was a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Before joining the Belfer Center, Heinonen served for 27 years at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

Fatemeh Aman, Independent Analyst, Iran and South Asia

Fatemeh Aman has written on Iranian, Afghan, and broader Middle East affairs for over 25 years and advised U.S. and non-governmental officials. A former non-resident fellow at the Middle East Institute and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, a writer, producer, and anchor at Voice of America and correspondent at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, her work has appeared in Jane’s Islamic Affairs Analyst, Jane’s Intelligence Review and the Stimson Center’s Middle East Perspectives.

Chuck Freilich, Senior Fellow, Israel Institute for National Security Studies (INSS)

Prof. Chuck Freilich, a senior fellow at INSS, is a former Israeli deputy national security adviser, a former senior fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center and has taught political science at Harvard, Columbia, NYU and Tel Aviv Universities. Freilich is the author of several books including “Zion’s Dilemmas: How Israel Makes National Security Policy” and “Israel and the Cyber Threat: How the Startup Nation Became a Global Cyber Power.”

Kelsey Davenport, Director for Nonproliferation Policy, Arms Control Association

Kelsey Davenport is the Director for Nonproliferation Policy at the Arms Control Association, where she focuses on the nuclear and missile programs in Iran, North Korea, India, and Pakistan and on international efforts to prevent proliferation and nuclear terrorism. She also reports on developments in these areas for Arms Control Today and runs the Arms Control Association’s project assessing the effectiveness of multilateral voluntary initiatives that contribute to nonproliferation efforts.
