Sunao Matsumoto is a Visiting Fellow of the Japan Program at the Stimson Center. He is a Colonel in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and currently serves as a Research Fellow at the JASDF Air and Space Studies Institute (JASI). His research focuses on strengthening extended deterrence within the U.S.–Japan alliance, with particular attention to operational integration.
He holds a BA in International Relations from the National Defense Academy of Japan. He is a graduate of the Air War Course at the JASDF Air Command and Staff College and the Joint Advanced Course at the Joint Staff College.
