Zamir Akram, Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, will give a talk and engage in questions and answers at the Stimson Center on Tuesday, October 18th, from 2:00pm-4:00pm. The topic of his presentation will be "Deterrence and Regional Stability in South Asia." Given the importance of this topic and how few opportunities there are to engage on it with Pakistani visitors, I hope you will be able to join us.
Zamir Akram has had a distinguished career for over thirty-four years in Pakistan's Foreign Service. Prior to his current assignment, he served as Additional Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office (2005 to 2008). He has also served as Pakistan's Ambassador to Nepal (2002 to 2005). His foreign postings include Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington twice (1994 to 1998; 2000 to 2002), Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi (1989 to 1994), Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations in Geneva (1984 to 1987) and Pakistan Embassy in Moscow (1982 to 1984). At Headquarters he has been Additional Secretary for Arms Control and Disarmament Affairs (2007 to 2008), Director General (South Asia) (1998 to 2000) and Director General (UN) (2001 to 2002) as well as Director (Afghanistan) (1979 to 1981).
