Understanding the Energy-Climate-Security Relationship

Understanding the Energy-Climate-Security Relationship
Case Countries
The largest peacekeeping missions generate their own electricity from diesel generators. These generators produce high-levels of toxic greenhouse gases using fuel that is expensive and often dangerous to provide. These missions also consume the largest share of all electricity generated in their host countries, generating nearly all they consume, with over 90% coming from diesel-powered generators.

*MONUSCO obtains approximately 28 percent of its electricity from local power grids in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). To avoid double counting the mission’s electricity consumption with that of the DRC, the PKO share presented here was calculated after subtracting 28 percent from MONUSCO’s estimated electricity consumption of 48 GWh/y, which yielded an adjusted value of 34.56 GWh/y.
