New Stimson Program Aims to Strengthen Defense Policy and Military Effectiveness

Featuring  Dan Grazier

Washington, DC – The Stimson Center today launched the National Security Reform Program, a new policy program led by Senior Fellow and Program Director Dan Grazier. The program aims to better align U.S. defense spending with national security priorities.

The program’s first project, the Effective Defense Policy Project, will conduct threat assessments to help shape how the Pentagon approaches military force structure and arms control issues.

In addition to Grazier, the team includes Distinguished Fellow and Strategic Advisor Geoff Wilson, and Research Associate Julia Gledhill.

Stimson President & CEO Brian Finlay said: “In a time of global upheaval, it is imperative that we scrutinize the status quo and craft practical policies to better address the critical issues facing our national security. For 30 years, Stimson has championed independent thinking, and the launch of the National Security Reform program continues that tradition and brings back to the Center topics that were central to Stimson’s founding. By addressing defense inefficiencies and recommending practical reforms, we aim to create a more effective and rational defense policy. We are thrilled to welcome this remarkable team of accomplished policy innovators to drive this critical work forward.”

Dan Grazier, Senior Fellow and Program Director, said: “The entire team is deeply appreciative of the warm welcome we’ve received at the Stimson Center, and we’re excited to hit the ground running. By rigorously analyzing and exposing inefficiencies in defense spending and operations, our team aims to promote policies that are not only effective but also fiscally responsible. We are dedicated to ensuring that the U.S. military has the right people, doctrine, and equipment to meet modern security challenges. We’re looking forward to working closely with Stimson’s distinguished group of experts and learning from their deep expertise as we strive to make a meaningful impact to national security policies.”
