Alfredo Labbe

Ambassador Alfredo Labbé retired in 2018 after a 44 year career in the Chilean Foreign Service, He served as Political Director General (Permanent Secretary, 2014-2016); Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations Office and the International Organisations in Vienna, and Ambassador to Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia (2010-2014); Director for International and Human Security (2009-2010); Ambassador-Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (2005-2008); Deputy Director for Special Political Affairs (2003-2004); Deputy Permanent Representative (DPR) to the Conference on Disarmament (2000-2002) and DPR to the UN Office and the International Organisations in Geneva (2002); Chargé d’Affaires in Syria (1993-1995); Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Hungary and Political Secretary at the Embassies in Perú, Nicaragua and Ecuador (1977-1993). 

Currently, he is serving his second term (2022-2026) as Member of the International Humanitarian Fact Finding Commission and his third term as one of its four Vice-Presidents. He is member of the UN Group of Governmental Experts on Nuclear Disarmament Verification Issues (2022-2023). Previously, he served in the UN Group of Experts on Missiles (2007-2008) and the UN Group of Experts on Ammunition Stocks (2008).  

In 2007 he was elected Chair of the United Nations Open-ended Working Group on the Fourth General Assembly Special Session devoted to Disarmament (SSOD-IV), established by the UN General Assembly Resolution 61/60 (December 2006). 

He is currently a Professor at the National Academy for Political and Strategic Studies (Chile) and the Chilean Diplomatic Academy. He is a Non-Resident Fellow of the Stimson Center, Washington, D.C. and Member of Chatham House. Since 2022 he is active in Pugwash, Latin America.
