GPOI Renewable Energy Report Launch

Launching the Global Peace Operations Initiative renewable energy report at the United Nations

On November 20, 2024, the United States Mission to the United Nations hosted a report launch event for national missions to the UN and UN staff.  The event was an opportunity to share initial lessons learned from Nepal, the United States, and the UN’s hybrid solar power generation pilot project. For the pilot project, the United States, through the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) procured two hybrid solar photovoltaic generation systems in support of the Nepali Army’s deployment to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) at Rumbek, South Sudan, and the Birendra Peacekeeping Operations Training Center in Panchkal, Nepal.  Ambassador Christopher Lu, U.S. Representative to the UN for Management and Reform, Mr. Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for UN Department of Operational Support, and Ambassador H.E. Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN provided brief opening remarks.  The report’s chief author, Andrew Hyde, Director and Senior Fellow of the Multilateral Financial Diplomacy and Powering Peace programs at the Stimson Center, presented the report’s principal findings and recommendations.
