Two decades after India and Pakistan tested nuclear weapons, South Asia remains one of the most crisis-prone regions in the world with some of the highest levels of contested borders, militarized interstate disputes, and terrorist attacks. The potential costs of a new crisis escalating remain high.
The 2017 South Asia strategy review revealed the United States maintains high stakes in the region. South Asia hosts thousands of U.S. troops, with more on the way. It plays a critical node in the administration’s “Indo-Pacific” strategy. And early 2018 foreign policy statements indicate the subcontinent will continue to be high on the agenda.
Please join us for a discussion on the past and future of South Asian crises as well as evolving U.S. stakes in the region. The Stimson Center South Asia Program will launch its latest publication, Investigating Crises: South Asia’s Lessons, Evolving Dynamics, and Trajectories, edited by Sameer Lalwani and Hannah Haegeland. For over 25 years the Stimson Center has closely studied the cadence and dynamics of South Asian crises to better inform policymakers in New Delhi, Islamabad, and Beijing. In ten chapters, authors from China, India, Pakistan, and the United States continue that tradition with assessments of South Asian crisis behavior from 1987-2017 and related implications for the future of crisis management on the subcontinent.
