The Stimson Center announced today that Yuki Tatsumi and Yun Sun have been appointed Co-Directors of the East Asia program. Tatsumi and Sun join Alan D. Romberg in overseeing the strategic direction of Stimson’s growing East Asia program. Sun and Tatsumi will continue to direct Stimson’s China and Japan programs respectively.
“Asia has long been a strategic cornerstone of Stimson’s programming,” said Stimson Center President and CEO Brian Finlay. “These enterprising, forward-thinking and innovative thinkers will advance that tradition on the Korean Peninsula, China, Japan, and beyond. Yun Sun joined Stimson in 2012 and directs the Center’s China program. Yun previously served as a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution where she focused on Chinese National security decision-making processes and China-Africa relations, and the China Analyst at the International Crisis Group based in Beijing. Yun earned her B.A. and M.A. in international relations from the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing, and her M.I.P.P. from George Washington University.
“China continues to grow its presence on the global stage amid changing U.S. policies to engage the Asia-Pacific,” said Yun Sun. “I look forward to working even closer with Brian, Yuki, and Alan as we develop opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration to generate nonpartisan, pragmatic polices that make East Asia and the world more secure.”
Yuki Tatsumi joined Stimson in 2004 and directs the Center’s Japan program. Tatsumi previously served as a Special Assistant for Political Affairs at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, and a Research Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. In 2012 Tatsumi was awarded a Letter of Appreciation for her work toward advancing mutual understanding between the United States and Japan. She holds a B.A. in liberal arts from the International Christian University in Tokyo and an M.A. in international economics and Asian studies from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
“As Japan evaluates its defense posture, there is a tremendous opportunity for the U.S. and Japan to collaborate even more effectively,” said Yuki Tatusmi. “Stimson has long recognized these opportunities and fostered new ones through military and civilian fellowships, and vital research.
