Michael Madden is a Nonresident Fellow in Stimson’s 38 North program and founder and director of North Korea Leadership Watch, an all-source analytical website focused on North Korean politics, national security community and influential elites. Michael is also a Nonresident Fellow at the European Center for North Korean Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria.
Michael has authored numerous studies for the US Government on North Korean decisionmaking processes and dynamics, crisis management, the Kim Family and the anthropology of elite demographics and influence. He has also written several hundred organizational profiles on North Korean institutions and biographical sketches on key North Korean officials.
From 2016 to 2018, Michael was a Visiting Fellow at the US-Korea Institute at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University. He has appeared in several documentaries including Frontline, The Dictator’s Playbook and North Korea: Inside the Mind of a Dictator. His writing has appeared in the BBC, CNN, NK News and KPA Journal.
