The conflict in Yemen is currently one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, yet is often forgotten by the international community. It is reported that close to 6,000 civilians have been killed in the conflict and almost 9,000 wounded as a result of indiscriminate and disproportionate airstrikes, artillery fire and rocket launches. Many civilians languish and are tortured in secret prisons. The suffering of ordinary citizens is exacerbated by blockades of humanitarian aid and food. The event aims to explore how war crimes, crimes against humanity and the most egregious human rights violations can be addressed to promote accountability and obtain reparations for the countless victims.
Please join the American Society of International Law, the Stimson Center, and Washington Foreign Law Society for an in-depth and expert discussion, led by Amb. Stephen Rapp and Former Chief Prosecutor David Crane, about the situation on the ground in Yemen, and what solutions can be found to end impunity and uphold fundamental international standards.
WHAT: The event will focus on the devastating, continuing conflict in Yemen through the lens of international human rights, humanitarian and criminal law, and aims to examine what remedies under international law can be pursued to hold those responsible to account and to rebuild the lives of the ever-increasing numbers of civilians torn apart by years of war.
