“American Portrait Project” is a Taiwan-based survey that investigates the Taiwanese public’s perception of the United States and China and evaluates the development of U.S.-Taiwan-China Relations in order to understand the impact of the United States’ Taiwan Policy toward Taiwan’s public opinion.
Dr. James Lee (IEAS, Academia Sinica) and Dr. Hsin-Hsin Pan (Department of Sociology, Soochow University) will discuss the findings from the third wave of the survey, which was conducted by the Election Study Center at National Chencghi University from September 14 to 19, 2023, via telephone interviews with 1,211 Taiwanese adults, with sampling error margins of ±2.82 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence interval.

James Lee, Ph.D., Assistant Research Fellow, Academia Sinica
James Lee is an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of European and American Studies at Academia Sinica. His research interests are in U.S. foreign policy and the security of Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and has held research positions at the European University Institute in Florence and the University of California, San Diego.
Hsin-Hsin Pan, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Soochow University
Dr. Hsin-Hsin Pan is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Soochow University. Her research interests include political sociology, social psychology, survey research methods, and the social foundations of contemporary China’s political transformation. Dr. Pan was a recipient of Taiwan fellow and visited the Wilson Center in the United States for academic exchange in 2021.
Chien-Huei Wu, Ph.D., Research Professor, Institute of European and American Studies, Academia Sinica
Dr. Chien-Huei Wu is currently a Research Fellow/Professor at the Institute of European and American Studies, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan. His research interests cover US-China relations, the Taiwan Relations Act, transpacific relations, EU external relations law, and international economic law. He closely follows trade negotiations and global supply chain resilience.
