Stimson Center to Relaunch Four Track 2 Diplomacy Projects

Projects Build on Legacy of the EastWest Institute, Include Bilateral Mil-to-Mill and Regional Peacebuilding Dialogues

The Stimson Center will relaunch four projects focused on Track 2 and Track 1.5 diplomacy in the coming weeks, building on work previously conducted by the EastWest Institute. The Stimson Center has 30 years of experience with international dialogues, simulations, and senior-level stakeholder engagement.

The EastWest Institute announced today that it will cease operations on January 31.

The new projects will include: US-China and US-Russia military-to-military dialogues, Iran-Saudi Arabia and Iraq regional dialogues, and hydro-diplomacy dialogues in Southern Asia. Some former EastWest Institute staff will join the Stimson Center. Additional details will be released as Stimson relaunches the projects.

Brian Finlay, President and CEO of the Stimson Center, said “The EastWest Institute built a well-deserved reputation for leadership in Track 2 diplomacy—one that complements Stimson’s own record of backchannel diplomacy. In this complex new world, engagement and dialogue are more important than ever to meet pressing transnational threats. We are proud to expand our work and carry the EastWest legacy into the future.”

Bruce McConnell, President and CEO of the EastWest Institute, said “Stimson, like EastWest, matches academic rigor with practical experience and collaborative stakeholder engagement. Our shared values and approach mean that these initiatives have found the right home at the Stimson Center. I am confident they will continue to make a meaningful difference around the world and build on the EastWest Institute’s legacy for years to come.”

THE STIMSON CENTER promotes international security, shared prosperity, and justice through applied research and independent analysis, deep engagement, and policy innovation.
