A Grim Anniversary: Marking Two Years of the Russo-Ukraine War

Stimson Center experts break down the implications of the conflict two years on

This week marks a grim anniversary: Two years ago, Russia launched its unlawful invasion of Ukraine, which not only led to a humanitarian crisis on the ground, but also had significant implications for European security architecture, NATO enlargement, and the international order, writ large.

Today, the future of the conflict remains uncertain, with possibilities ranging from continued low-level skirmishes to a more significant escalation of hostilities that threaten wider conflict, making Ukraine a focal point of geopolitical tensions between Russia and the West.

For the past two years, the Stimson Center has offered unique analysis of the war, encompassing the geopolitical implications, humanitarian concerns, diplomatic efforts, and alternative futures of how the conflict might end – all designed to guide policymakers and promote practical solutions in the face of uncertainty. Such analysis by Stimson experts underscores the critical importance of our mission, as we strive to promote dialogue, deepen understanding, and build innovative solutions to complex global challenges.

Below we offer a series of reflections on the past, present, and future implications of the war in Ukraine. I encourage you to look for more detailed on the homepage.
