South Asia Program Welcomes New Deputy Director

Today, the Stimson Center’s South Asia program welcomes Frank O’Donnell as its new Deputy Director and Fellow. O’Donnell, who was previously a Non-Resident Fellow with the South Asia program, brings additional expertise in the security dynamics of South Asia to a program already well-known for innovative approaches to the region’s pressing strategic challenges.

Elizabeth Threlkeld, Director of the South Asia program, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Frank as our new Deputy Director. We have already benefited enormously from his support as a Non-Resident Fellow. His deep familiarity with regional security dynamics and commitment to mentoring the next generation makes him a strong addition to help lead our growing team.”

“I am delighted to take on this expanded role with the South Asia program, continue to develop innovative policy solutions to regional security challenges, and support open inquiry and exchange in support of the Program’s critical mission,” said O’Donnell.

Before joining Stimson, O’Donnell held research roles at the Fletcher School and U.S. Naval War College. His areas of expertise include nuclear doctrine and posture development, conventional military modernization, and national security policymaking processes in Southern Asia. O’Donnell holds a Ph.D. in Defense Studies from King’s College London, an M.Sc. in Strategic Studies from the University of Aberdeen, and an M.A. in International Relations and Middle East Studies from the University of St. Andrews.
