Extended Deterrence and Strategic Stability in Northeast Asia
Stimson’s event on nuclear deterrence in northeast Asia was covered by C-SPAN. The panelists examined the simultaneous emergence of a nuclear-armed North Korea and a China that is modernizing and diversifying its nuclear posture, as well as extended deterrence and strategic stability that are under new stress in Northeast Asia. The featured guest was Brad Roberts, former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy. Yuki Tatsumi, a Senior Associate with Stimson’s East Asia program, served as moderator.
The presentation drew on the results of a fellowship just concluded in Tokyo, where Roberts was a visiting fellow at the Japanese Ministry of Defense think tank, the National Institute for Defense Studies, for 6 weeks until July 4. It reviewed key developments in the region in terms of their impact on extended deterrence and strategic stability, described the strategies of the United States and its East Asian allies to strengthen regional deterrence and reviewed key issues likely to be in discussion among allies in coming years.
