Amara Thiha

Amara Thiha is a Nonresident Fellow at the Stimson Center. From 2015 October to 2016, Amara served in Technical Secretariat Center (TSC) of Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committee (JMC) as Research Manager. In this role, he served as the person responsible for the organizational development of the JMC, and for the establishment of the TSC.

In December 2013, he returned to Rangoon from Portugal for his doctoral dissertation and had an opportunity to take part in Myanmar Peace Process. He served in the Ceasefire Negotiation and Implementation Program (CFNI) of Myanmar Peace Center (MPC) and took responsibility for the development of Conflict Early Warning System (Township Conflict Indexing System). He was also a member of a technical assistance team to the Government negotiators during the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) drafting process. He was involved in the drafting process from the beginning through its signing, and helped establish the implementation bodies of NCA.

A Rangoon native, Amara Thiha is a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) from Coimbra University, Portugal and holds the postgraduate degrees from Uppsala University and Orebro University in Sweden. He holds his B.A. in South East Asia and Pacific Studies from West Yangon University.

He is currently working on Security Sector Development and Defense Review Process in Myanmar. Also involved in numbers of research projects on OBOR and Myanmar energy security.
